Plastic nightmare ? Or incredible opportunity ?

Yet another article on how waste is.... wasted !

When plastics, petroleum based products, are becoming and will continue to become a more and more rare/affordable resource, the only solution we seem to come up with is to look for deeper, harder and at the end, highly risky to exploit oil deposits...

This is supposed to justify things like hydraulic fracturing and drillings at seas to depth where if anything goes wrong... well there's not much we can do about it and it's the real nightmare... (see BP oil spill).

And this seems even more (forgive the word) stupid when we have on land and also on sea (unfortunately) an incredible amount of resources also known as garbage !

Not only these resources aren't just "raw materials", these are already made plastics that for the overwhelming majority of them are perfectly recyclable !

The economical logic would be to collect these highly profitable resources in order to re-use them and set up products life cycles and processes for these products to find efficiently themselves in a re-usable cycle.

But "Homo Economicus" doesn't really exist (meaning men making rational decisions based on business logic and profitability) and as long as we won't stop seing garbage as garbage instead of the treasure and incredible solution that it is... we'll continue to have "Plastic nightmares" articles...

Huge increase of solar panels efficiency combined with substantial cost reduction ! Go UNSW !

Beyond this tremendous innovation, this news has got me particularly excited since it's my University we're talking about ! :)

As developed more in depth by the article, a design improvement using hydrogen atoms to counter the defects of the silicon cells used in solar panels enable to reach a top quality efficiency while substantially reducing their cost ! How awesome is that ??!!

This is in a way a potential "disruptive innovation" since it could allow solar panels to reach a greater market by making it more affordable and cost effective without giving up on efficiency, au contraire !

And reach a larger market, make solar panels profitable even on the short term, that is THE key stake of the solar industry !

The solar industry needs to pass ASAP the breaking point where it will be big enough to sustain itself without being oversensitive to the slightest economical change and at the mercy of governments policies, lack of ambition and inconsistence.

Sustainable Development, best business model PROFIT WISE !

Ray Anderson (CEO of Interface Inc and entrepreneur) recently passed away, but his message, idea and vision remains as relevant and accurate as ever.

He demonstrated by becoming the leader and the largest manufacturer in his market and sector of activity (modular carpet for commercial use) how sustainable development enabled his company to thrive tremendously from a profit perspective, even though its products were petroleum based !

Small talk, big perspectives. A must see !
